How to Control Mosquitoes in Your Yard

Spending time in your yard during the summer months is a way to relax and enjoy some downtime in the comfort of your own home. However, sitting with mosquitos in your yard is less-than-ideal and often results in frustration and being forced to move elsewhere. Knowing how to control mosquitoes in your yard can help you to make the most of your time outdoors, regardless of the time of year.

Keep Your Yard Landscaped

Long grass and unkempt yards attract a myriad of bugs and insects, including mosquitoes. Keep your yard clean and manicured by cutting down your lawn weekly and eliminating weeds and overgrown plants. Avoid allowing your grass and plants to grow uncontrollably. If mosquitoes are out of control in your yard, it may be time to think of removing excess plants and/or shrubbery from the area altogether. A landscaped yard is one of the best ways to implement mosquito control in and around your own home in any climate or location.

Remove and Eliminate Standing Water

Standing water is one of the most common issues when it comes to dealing with mosquitos in your yard. One of the most effective mosquito control methods includes removing and eliminating standing water from a yard and surrounding areas. Standing water accumulates in puddles, swamps, and even after major floods. Other forms of standing water that are likely to attract mosquitoes into your yard include:

  • Birdbaths
  • Planters
  • Gutters
  • Sandboxes (unfilled)
  • Children's toys
  • Tarps
  • Gardening tools
  • Buckets
  • Open trash cans

Not only does standing and stagnating water attract mosquitos to an area, but it also provides a breeding ground for a variety of outdoor and indoor insects. Standing water is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and insects, which is why it is so important to address standing and stagnate water in your yard immediately. Any time you spend time outdoors or whenever you enter your yard after a rainfall, empty surrounding containers, buckets, and other areas that are prone to collecting standing water over time.

Use Mosquito Repellants

Using natural and store-bought mosquito repellents is a way to control mosquitoes in your yard, especially if you are using citronella candles or other homemade solutions that are designed to deter mosquitoes in particular. Many mosquito repellents include the use of citronella, cloves, lemons, oranges, mint, and even eucalyptus.

Plant and Use Mosquito Repellant Plants

In addition to making your own citronella candles and mosquito repellant solutions, you can also choose to plant your very own citronella plant. Some additional plants and herbs that are ideal mosquito repellents that can be planted in traditional backyards include:

  • Lemongrass: Lemongrass is known to work to repel mosquitoes in warmer climates, and is not optimal for Northern climates. Lemongrass is ideal in locations such as Louisiana, Texas, and Florida.
  • Basil: Basil is one of the easiest herbs to grow and can be grown in just about any climate in the continental US year-round.
  • Lemon balm: Lemon balm is another mosquito repellant plant that can work to keep mosquitoes at bay. Lemon balm, while helpful, should always be maintained, as it has a tendency to grow fast and out of control when left on its own.

Use a Magnet or Zapper

Install a mosquito magnet or zapper contraption in your yard near where you sit or entertain guests. Magnet and zapper contractions can be hung up or installed on walls, doors, and other outdoor locations that make the most sense for your yard. Another tool that is useful in eliminating mosquitos and other flying insects includes a zapping mosquito tennis racket. The zapping racket provides immediate zapping abilities to eliminate mosquitoes on the fly.

Working With Professionals

Another way to ensure that your mosquito control methods are effective is to work directly with professionals who have experience in handling mosquitoes in yards, damp areas, and unique environments. Hiring professionals who specialize in eliminating mosquitoes and pests from various areas, both indoors and out, is a way to gain peace of mind while knowing that your yard is in the right hands. The right professionals can help eliminate the mosquitoes in your yard, so you can make the most of the time you choose to spend outdoors.

Knowing how to control mosquitoes is a way for you to maximize the time you can spend outside of your home without feeling pestered or overwhelmed. By maintaining your lawn and taking measures to ward off mosquitoes, minimize the presence of mosquitoes in your yard year-round.
